BRUSSELS, March 17 (Press Release)– The European Union Council has added Al Azaim Media Foundation, the media arm of the Islamic State’s Khorasan Province, to its autonomous sanctions list targeting persons, groups, and entities linked to ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaeda. This decision underscores the EU’s steadfast commitment to combating terrorism.
With this inclusion, the EU’s autonomous sanctions list now comprises 15 individuals and 7 groups associated with these organizations. Those listed face an asset freeze and a prohibition on EU individuals and entities from providing funds or economic resources to them. Additionally, listed individuals are subject to a travel ban.
The decision reflects the EU’s continued resolve to counter the threats posed by ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaeda, and their affiliates. By targeting entities that spread propaganda and fund terrorist activities, the EU aims to bolster international peace and security.
The relevant legal acts have been published in the Official Journal of the EU. These measures complement existing UN sanctions against ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaeda. The Council had extended these restrictive measures in October 2024, ensuring their validity until October 31, 2025.
The EU first gained the authority to autonomously impose sanctions against these organizations and their affiliates in September 2016. This decision further exemplifies the EU’s proactive stance in addressing global terrorism.
