ASTANA, Nov 12 (The Astana Times) – Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and China have signed an agreement to establish an intermodal cargo terminal at the Port of Baku in Alat. The signing took place on the sidelines of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

According to the press service of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, the national railway company, the new terminal will feature a multi-purpose cargo yard, a 5,000-square-meter indoor warehouse complex, and a container yard with a capacity of over 1,000 containers. This initiative leverages Azerbaijan’s provision of land, operating berths, and terminal capacities at the port.

The project aims to enhance container train traffic on the China-Europe-China route via the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. By doing so, it is expected to reduce delivery times, lower transportation costs, and minimize transshipment times, significantly boosting logistical efficiency in the region.
