TASHKENT, Nov 20(Gazeta.uz): President Shavkat Mirziyoyev addressed the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, proposing that 2025 be declared the Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy in Uzbekistan.

The President highlighted the severe impacts of climate change, felt acutely in Uzbekistan and worldwide. He cited air and water pollution, soil erosion, desertification, and fossil fuel dependency as key contributors to global warming, increasing natural disasters and posing significant threats to both the environment and public health.

To combat these issues, Uzbekistan has launched the “Yashil Makon” (Green Space) initiative and implemented a Regional climate strategy in partnership with neighbouring countries. Notably, the Central Asian University for Climate and Environmental Studies was established in Tashkent.

Uzbekistan has also led two major UN resolutions on environmental matters. President Mirziyoyev noted that green energy is becoming a crucial driver of the nation’s economy.

Reflecting the opinions and recommendations of citizens, the President’s proposal aims to elevate environmental efforts to new heights. The deputies gave unanimous support to the proposal, as confirmed by press secretary Sherzod Asadov.

The government is now set to develop a state program focusing on key priorities for 2025, including the adoption of green technologies, water conservation, expansion of green spaces, mitigation of the Aral Sea crisis, waste management, and enhancement of public health.

For context, 2024 was declared the Year of Supporting Youth and Entrepreneurship, while 2023 was designated the Year of Caring for People and Quality Education in Uzbekistan.
