TASHKENT— The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan has posthumously awarded the Order of Friendship to British citizens John and Phyllis Emily Le Breton for their extraordinary courage and humanitarian actions during the Second World War.

According to a presidential decree issued today, the late couple was honored for sheltering and saving the life of Uzbek soldier Bokijon Akramov, who escaped from a Nazi concentration camp on the island of Jersey under extremely dangerous circumstances. Despite the grave risk to their own lives, the Le Bretons provided him refuge in their home, protecting him from capture.

The decree praises the couple’s “great courage and humanitarian qualities” and highlights their actions as exemplifying the highest ideals of peace, friendship, and brotherhood among nations. It underscores their selfless contribution to fostering international understanding and solidarity.

The Order of Friendship is one of Uzbekistan’s highest state honors, typically bestowed on foreign nationals for outstanding contributions to strengthening bilateral ties, promoting peace, and upholding humanitarian values.

More than eight decades after the events, this posthumous recognition serves as a lasting tribute from the Uzbek people to the Le Bretons’ bravery and moral integrity. It commemorates a remarkable act of compassion that bridged citizens of Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom during one of history’s darkest chapters.

A formal award ceremony is expected to be held in due course, with representatives of the Le Breton family receiving the honor.

Earlier reports in the British media identified Bokijon Akramovi as Ukrainian; however, subsequent clarification confirmed that he is a citizen of Uzbekistan.
