EU, India launch strategic dialogue, vow deeper security ties

BRUSSELS, June 10 (Imran Saqib Ch/LP Correspondent) – European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, and India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, convened the inaugural EU-India Strategic Dialogue in Brussels.

The high-level meeting focused on deepening the EU-India bilateral partnership, addressing pressing regional and global challenges, and enhancing cooperation specifically in security and defence sectors.

Recognizing the critical need for collaboration amidst increasingly complex global security threats, both leaders emphasized the importance of joint efforts in key areas of mutual concern. These include:

  • Counterterrorism

  • Cybersecurity

  • Countering hybrid threats and foreign information manipulation/interference

  • Maritime security and domain awareness

  • Space security

  • Defence industry cooperation

The Dialogue reaffirmed a strong shared commitment to upholding a rules-based international order and promoting global peace, stability, and prosperity. This foundation is rooted in common democratic values and converging strategic interests.

The discussions highlighted the necessity for close coordination on regional and global security issues, acknowledging the interconnected security dynamics between Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. Both sides expressed a clear mutual interest in significantly strengthening and expanding EU-India security and defence ties.
