3 round of talk: Iran tables comprehensive plan in Geneva, Signals seriousness on Nuclear Deal

GENEVA — Iran has presented a set of proposals to the United States during a third round of indirect nuclear talks held in Geneva on Wednesday under Omani mediation, according to Iranian officials.

Tehran described the package as addressing what it called all “pretexts” raised by Washington over Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme. The proposals were conveyed to the US delegation through Oman’s Foreign Minister, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, who has facilitated all three rounds of discussions this month. Neither side has disclosed details of the offer.

The negotiations, aimed at resolving longstanding disputes over Iran’s nuclear activities and securing sanctions relief, come amid heightened regional tensions and continued diplomatic efforts to avert further escalation.

Iran’s delegation is led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in Geneva on Wednesday. Prior to the talks, he met his Omani counterpart to outline Tehran’s position on a potential agreement covering both nuclear restrictions and the lifting of sanctions.

In an interview to India Today before departing for Switzerland, Mr Araghchi said a “fair, balanced and equitable” agreement with Washington remained achievable. He cautioned, however, against what he described as speculative media narratives intended to influence the diplomatic process.

The US delegation is headed by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and includes Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former President Donald Trump. Mr Al Busaidi also met American representatives ahead of the formal session. According to Oman’s Foreign Ministry, the discussions covered technical and monitoring issues in detail, as well as US concerns and potential guarantees linked to any future agreement.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, said Tehran’s delegation included specialists in nuclear science, sanctions, legal affairs and economics, underlining what he described as Iran’s preparedness for sustained negotiations. He added that Iran was willing to continue talks “for as long as necessary”.

Iranian state media reported that any rejection of the proposals by Washington would reinforce suspicions in Tehran about the US commitment to diplomacy.

Oman, which has played a longstanding mediating role between the two sides, described the atmosphere as serious and constructive, pointing to what it called a willingness from both delegations to explore new ideas.

The talks follow earlier rounds in Muscat and Geneva and take place against a backdrop of mutual mistrust. Tehran maintains that its nuclear programme is strictly peaceful, while Washington continues to seek verifiable assurances aimed at preventing any move towards weaponisation.

On Tuesday, Mr Araghchi held a 90-minute meeting with Mr Al Busaidi in Geneva. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, also met the Omani foreign minister to discuss technical aspects related to the negotiations.
