TAIPEI, Taiwan (AFP)  A delegation of US lawmakers met with Taiwan’s legislative chief on Monday as part of a five-day visit to the autonomous island.

The delegation that arrived on Sunday includes Lo Canna of California, Tony Gonzalez of Texas, Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts and Jonathan Jackson of Illinois.

He is also scheduled to meet with President Tsai Ing-wen and business leaders. On Monday, they met with Morris Chan, founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, considered the father of the island’s chip industry. Khanna, a Democrat representing Silicon Valley, said he came to Taiwan to learn about the island’s role in the semiconductor industry. Khanna and Auchincloss are members of the House’s new Select Committee focused on competing with China.

He addressed the implicit threat their visit faces, as China opposes any form of interaction between Taiwan and foreign governments.China claims the island as part of its own territory. If necessary, they must unify by force, increasing military and diplomatic harassment of Taiwan.

“Our efforts to get here will never provoke China, recognize the importance of a relationship like Taiwan’s, and ultimately strive for peace in the region,” the president said. It is in line with the foreign policy of the United States,” Khanna said. Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan Speaker You Si-kun used a speech to strike back at Wang Yi, the supreme leader of the Chinese Communist Party’s foreign policy in One Land of the Future.
