MOSCOW/TASS/- The Russia-led security alliance, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), is currently conducting strategic command exercises. These drills aim to enhance their ability to stabilize situations in the Central Asian region in the face of escalating threats, according to Vladislav Shchegrikovich, a spokesperson for the CSTO Joint Headquarters.
He explained that a hypothetical military-political and strategic situation has been created, with the identities of countries and organizations altered. This is to simulate a scenario where potential threats escalate within the organization’s area of responsibility, leading to a crisis in a typical Central Asian region of collective security.
CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov stated that these drills are taking place amidst a challenging global context. “Existing conflicts are intensifying in various parts of the world, and new areas of tension are emerging, including within the CSTO’s jurisdiction. Modern crises are hybrid in nature and demand holistic strategies for resolution,” he said. He added that the purpose of these drills is to refine the process of collective crisis response and evaluate its effectiveness.
The exercises are being supervised by the Chief of the Joint Headquarters, Colonel General Andrey Serdyukov.
As per the drill’s narrative, a CSTO member state’s president requests assistance from the chairman of the CSTO Collective Security Council. An emergency session of the Council then decides to initiate a peacekeeping operation. To execute this decision, a crisis response center and crisis management groups from the member states are established. Particular emphasis is placed on the assembly of peacekeeping forces, their deployment to the conflict zone, and matters of military-technical support.
