BEIRUT (AP) Israeli missiles aimed at a city in western Syria on Sunday wounded three Syrian soldiers, Syrian state media said.

The state-run news agency SANA said, citing military sources, that rockets were fired in Masyaf, Hama province, at dawn. Syrian air defenses shot down several of them.

Syrian state media reported no deaths.

But the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based opposition war watchdog, said the attack targeted an arsenal belonging to the Iran-backed militia and killed three military personnel without identifying their affiliation. There was no immediate comment from Israel, which has launched hundreds of strikes against targets in Syria over the years. However, such manipulations are rarely recognized or discussed.

It says it targets Iran-allied militia bases, specifically the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon. Hezbollah has fighters stationed in Syria to fight Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government forces. Israel also says it is targeting arms shipments believed to be intended for militias.

Israel previously attacked Masyaf in May 2022 and her in August, killing five and wounding two. The attack also targeted an arsenal owned by Iran’s militia, the Revolutionary Guards Corps, and Iran-backed militias, the Observatory said.
