On March 12-13, 2025, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, paid a state visit to the Kyrgyz Republic. This visit marked a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries and opened a new chapter in the history of the Central Asian region.
The key outcome of the negotiations between the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov, and the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, was the signing of the historic Border Agreement between the two states. This step was a major achievement in ensuring stability, peace, and prosperity in Central Asia. The agreement established a mutually agreed border line, putting an end to long-standing disputes and creating conditions for deepening mutual trust and good neighborly relations.

Additionally, during the visit, the heads of state agreed to resume direct air services between Bishkek and Dushanbe. The first flight operated by “Somon Air” on the “Dushanbe-Bishkek-Dushanbe” route is scheduled for March 14, 2025. This development will significantly facilitate citizens’ travel, strengthen business contacts, and expand tourism ties between the countries.
The presidents also discussed economic cooperation, expressing readiness to expand trade and economic collaboration with the goal of increasing bilateral trade turnover to USD 500 million. Special emphasis was placed on the development of industrial cooperation, joint agro-industrial projects, and the implementation of strategic energy initiatives, including the CASA-1000 project aimed at exporting electricity from Central Asia to South Asia.
An important aspect of the discussions was strengthening cultural and humanitarian ties. The presidents stressed the need to deepen cooperation in science, education, culture, tourism, youth policy, and sports. These initiatives will lay a strong foundation for strengthening the friendship between the peoples of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
During the visit, agreements were also reached on joint measures to combat terrorism, extremism, and transnational crime. The presidents expressed their intention to enhance coordination between the security services and relevant agencies of both countries to ensure the safety and protection of their citizens.
At the conclusion of the visit, Emomali Rahmon invited Sadyr Japarov to pay a return state visit to Tajikistan at a convenient time. This gesture highlights the commitment of both sides to further strengthening good neighborly relations and expanding cooperation for the stability and prosperity of the region.
