- The accord was established in 1956 between the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom
MOSCOW(TASS) – The Russian Government has officially ratified the law to terminate the fisheries agreement with the United Kingdom. This information was made public on a legal information web portal.
The original agreement, established in 1956 between the USSR and the United Kingdom, permitted British fishing vessels to operate in designated areas of the Barents Sea along the coast of the Kola Peninsula. Despite the dissolution of the USSR, the agreement remained in effect, with Russia as the successor state to the Soviet Union.
However, the agreement has been criticized for being predominantly one-sided and not providing substantial benefits to Russia, according to the materials accompanying the law. Given the revocation of the most favored nation trade status for Russia by the United Kingdom in March 2022, the termination of this agreement is not expected to have significant foreign political or economic repercussions for Russia.
The law will officially take effect ten days following its publication.
