BRUSSELS, Dec 10(Imran Saqib/Correspondent LP): In a press release, the European Union’s High Representative issued a statement on behalf of the EU, marking the fall of the Assad regime as a historic moment for the Syrian people. The EU expressed solidarity with the Syrian population, recognizing their immense suffering and resilience in the pursuit of dignity, freedom, and justice. The statement emphasized the need for Syrians to learn the truth about the fate of their loved ones.
The EU extended support to all Syrians, both within the country and in the diaspora, who are now filled with hope yet face an uncertain future. It underscored the importance of giving every Syrian the opportunity to reunify, stabilize, and rebuild their country, restore justice, and ensure accountability.
The statement highlighted the critical need to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity, independence, sovereignty, and state institutions, while firmly rejecting all forms of extremism. The EU called on all actors to avoid further violence, protect civilians, and uphold international humanitarian law. Special emphasis was placed on protecting minorities, including Christians and other non-majority groups, as well as ensuring the safety of foreign nationals and respecting diplomatic representations in Damascus. The preservation of Syria’s rich cultural heritage and religious monuments was also urged.
The EU stressed the imperative for all stakeholders to engage in an inclusive, Syrian-led and Syrian-owned dialogue on all key issues to ensure an orderly, peaceful, and inclusive transition, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the will of the Syrian people. The ongoing work of UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, was strongly supported by the EU through all relevant instruments.
In this critical period, the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to standing with the Syrian people and maintaining close contact with regional and international partners.
