LONDON — The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into former U.K. ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson following allegations of misconduct in public office.
In a statement Tuesday evening, the Met said it had received multiple reports after the U.S. Department of Justice released a large batch of documents connected to the Jeffrey Epstein case. One of those reports came directly from the U.K. government.
Police Commander Ella Marriott confirmed that officers are now investigating “a 72‑year‑old man, a former government minister,” in relation to potential misconduct offenses. Although the Met did not identify the individual, Mandelson — a long‑standing figure in the Labour Party — is 72 and appears in the newly disclosed Epstein‑related files.

The documents released by U.S. authorities include email exchanges between Epstein and Mandelson, some of which reference sensitive government matters. Mandelson did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.
A government spokesperson told POLITICO that officials “stand ready to provide whatever support and assistance the police need.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who appointed Mandelson as ambassador to Washington last year, described the latest allegations as “disgraceful” during a Cabinet meeting, according to people briefed on the discussion.
