KYIV(Reuters)-The Spokesperson for the Tavria (Southern) military district, has confirmed the arrival of cluster bombs in Ukraine. These munitions, banned in over 100 countries, were part of an $800-million security package provided by the United States. The spokeperson reiterated the Ukrainian military’s commitment to using these cluster bombs solely for targeting concentrations of enemy soldiers in combat situations.

According to the spokeperson, the delivery of cluster bombs came one week after the United States had announced its intention to send them. While cluster bombs are subject to widespread international condemnation due to their potential indiscriminate harm and long-lasting impact on civilian populations, Ukraine has assured that they will adhere to strict guidelines and restrict their usage to dislodging enemy combatants.

This development raises concerns among human rights organizations and advocates who stress the need for countries to completely eliminate the use of cluster bombs, given the high risk they pose to civilians even after the cessation of hostilities. The international community continues to work towards disarmament and the prevention of further use of these controversial munitions.
