TEHRAN – The Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, asserts that the United States, viewed as the Israeli regime’s primary supporter, should be held “answerable” for the deadly attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. The attack, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the death of Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, along with his deputy and five accompanying officers. Iran’s Ambassador to Damascus, Hossein Akbari, confirmed the deaths of seven individuals in the attack, though the exact number of casualties is yet to be determined.
Amir-Abdollahian said Iran’s Foreign Ministry had summoned the chargé d’affaires of Switzerland, which represents Washington’s interests in Tehran, after the attack.
“Crucial Dialogue”
The Iranian foreign minister outlined the severity of the Israeli regime’s attack and underscored the responsibility of the American administration during the summoning.
The statement emphasized that a significant message was delivered to the American administration, which is a backer of the Zionist regime. It underscored that the United States should bear responsibility.
The US has traditionally been a firm supporter of the Israeli regime, providing considerable military aid each year. It has protected Tel Aviv from criticism and punitive measures at the United Nations by exercising its veto power.

On Monday, a phone call took place between Amir-Abdollahian and Hissein Brahim Taha, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. During this call, Amir-Abdollahian called for a fitting response to the Israeli aggression.
Taha expressed strong condemnation of the attack, drawing attention to the regime’s violent past and offering condolences to the Iranian government and its people.
The aggression has been denounced by numerous regional resistance groups and countries around the globe, with warnings about its potential to heighten tensions.
On the same day, Iran called on the United Nations Security Council to express strong disapproval of the Israeli aggression and requested an immediate meeting to discuss the regime’s transgressions.
In a letter addressed to the Council, Zahra Ershadi, Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, labeled the aggression as a “despicable and repugnant act of terrorism.”
The letter underscored that such horrific acts are blatant breaches of international law and pose a serious risk to regional peace and stability.
Iran called on the Council to unequivocally condemn the aggression and take all necessary steps, including the organization of an immediate meeting, to address this flagrant violation.
