GAZA:Overnight Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have resulted in the loss of at least 55 lives and the destruction of 30 homes, according to authorities in the besieged territory. This marks a significant escalation in Israel’s air campaign, and it comes as preparations for a potential ground invasion are underway. The Hamas government’s press office issued a statement, confirming that “more than 55” people lost their lives in the attacks on Saturday night.
In the ongoing conflict, the casualties in Gaza have risen to over 4,300 Palestinians, predominantly civilians, who have lost their lives due to Israel’s bombing campaign, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
Following the October 7 attacks by Hamas inside Israel, which Israeli officials claim resulted in the deaths of more than 1,400 individuals, primarily civilians, Israel has vowed to eradicate the Hamas organization.
The United Nations reports that Israeli air raids have caused significant damage to or complete destruction of approximately 40 percent of Gaza’s housing, leaving much of the area in ruins.
In preparation for its first ground incursion into Gaza in nearly a decade, Israel has instructed 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza to evacuate to the south.
Even the southern part of Gaza has not been immune to air attacks, with nine people losing their lives in the southern city of Khan Younis on Saturday night, as confirmed by Hamas authorities.
Israel’s military has committed to escalating its air raids in the days ahead to minimize risks to its troops as they prepare to enter Gaza.
The looming ground offensive has sparked concerns about the potential for increased civilian casualties, given the limited safe refuge options in the densely populated enclave. Gaza has been subjected to an Israeli blockade since 2006, intensifying the vulnerability of its residents. According to UN estimates, over a million people have been displaced in Gaza.
Israeli military spokesperson Admiral Daniel Hagari announced on Saturday, “Starting today, we are intensifying our airstrikes while minimizing the risks involved.”
“We are poised to escalate our operations, so I’ve urged residents of Gaza City to continue moving south to ensure their safety.”
Israeli forces are anticipated to confront several challenges as they embark on a ground incursion, such as dealing with the presence of Hamas-planted booby traps and intricate tunnel networks. Additionally, the well-being of approximately 200 individuals held captive by Hamas further complicates the situation.
“Gaza’s high population density presents a complex operational environment, with the enemy’s extensive preparations, but we, too, are prepared for their actions,” stated Israeli Lieutenant-General Herzi Halevi.
