BISHKEK: Kyrgyz President Sidor Zaprov recently addressed concerns over reports suggesting Kyrgyzstan’s involvement in circumventing sanctions in a recent media interview.

In response to queries about a reported letter from American Senator Robert Menendez, requesting Kyrgyzstan’s compliance with sanctions against Russia, President Zhaparov expressed his firm stance. He dismissed suspicions of Kyrgyzstan assisting in sanctions evasion, emphasizing the limited influence of Kyrgyzstan on Russia and China, both being neighbouring giants with a substantial common border. President Zhaparov highlighted that if Russia had the inclination, it possessed numerous alternative means for transporting goods, rendering Kyrgyzstan’s involvement inconsequential.

President Zhaparov acknowledged a recent incident involving the detention of a Kyrgyz company attempting to transport drones through Kazakhstan, explaining that Kyrgyzstan currently prohibits the export of drones and unmanned aerial vehicles. He noted that such incidents have prompted numerous letters from international officials, suggesting that they may be seeking pretexts to exert pressure on Kyrgyzstan and sway its alignment. President Zhaparov asserted Kyrgyzstan’s sovereignty and its commitment to impartial dealings with all nations, affirming a multi-vector policy.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine issue, President Zhaparov reiterated Kyrgyzstan’s neutral position, asserting that any potential changes in stance would have little bearing on the overall situation. He emphasized Kyrgyzstan’s primary focus on economic development, with a preference to stay clear of political entanglements.

In conclusion, President Zhaparov firmly declared, “Don’t disturb us. This is my answer,” underscoring his nation’s determination to pursue its economic goals and maintain its sovereign stance in the face of external pressures.
