BRUSSELS, Belgium. March 11(Imran Saqib/Correspondent LP) -The European Union has expressed deep concern over the recent violence in Syria’s coastal region, which has resulted in significant casualties, including civilians. The EU strongly condemns attacks by pro-Assad militias on security forces, as well as atrocities against civilians, including summary executions, allegedly carried out by groups supporting the transitional authorities’ security forces.
The EU commends the transitional authorities’ decision to establish an investigative committee to ensure accountability in line with international law. It calls for a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation to bring those responsible to justice. The EU also urges the transitional authorities to permit the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria to investigate these violations fully.
Reiterating its call for an end to violence across Syria, the EU emphasizes the need to protect Syrians of all backgrounds, allow unrestricted humanitarian aid, and uphold international human rights and humanitarian law. The EU warns against the manipulation of information, particularly by foreign actors, which could fuel further instability.
The EU welcomes the March 10 agreement between the transitional authorities and the SDF, which holds promise for greater stability and progress in Syria. It also supports the ongoing National Dialogue, initiated in February, as a platform to advance reconciliation and an inclusive political transition. Comprehensive transitional justice is seen as key to rebuilding peace in the country.
The EU highlights its suspension of certain sanctions as part of a gradual and reversible approach, with further actions contingent on the situation’s development. Lastly, it reaffirms its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity while advocating for a peaceful, inclusive transition free from foreign interference.
