  • Israel’s destruction of the Central Archives in Gaza is part of a broader pattern targeting cultural centers, parks, and memorials. This systematic assault during the war on Gaza raises serious concerns about the lasting impact on Palestinian heritage, culture, and collective memory.

GAZA,Palestine:The head of the Gaza municipality has reported that Israel has demolished the “Central Archives,” a repository of thousands of historical documents spanning over 150 years.

Yahya al Sarraj, speaking to Anadolu news agency, expressed concern over the severe impact of targeting the Central Archives, emphasizing its significance to the city. He stated, “These documents are a crucial part of our history and culture, holding valuable records, including plans for ancient buildings and handwritten documents by renowned national figures.”

Al Sarraj amented the destruction, noting that the ancient documents were deliberately burned, reducing them to ashes and erasing a substantial portion of Palestinian memory. He further highlighted the broader destruction, citing the targeting of cultural centers, public parks, and landmarks such as the Rashad al Shawwa Historical Cultural Center, which housed a theater and central library.

The head of the municipality pointed out that the Israeli occupation also aimed at prominent structures like the Palestinian Legislative Council and the memorial monument in the Memorial Park dedicated to the Unknown Soldier (Al Jundi Al Majhool). He expressed dismay at these actions, stating that they were carried out without any justification.
