MUNICH – Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s administration over its handling of the war in Ukraine, accusing it of undermining Western unity and NATO commitments.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Clinton described the administration’s approach as “disgraceful” and argued that it had weakened long-standing transatlantic alliances.

“He has betrayed the West, he’s betrayed human values, he’s betrayed the NATO Charter, the Atlantic Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” Clinton said during a panel discussion.

She further contended that President Trump was seeking power without adequate accountability. During the exchange, Czech Deputy Prime Minister Petr Macinka suggested that Clinton’s criticism stemmed from personal dislike of the president. Clinton responded directly, stating that her concerns were rooted in what she described as the broader consequences of his policies for the United States and the international community.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz highlighted what he characterized as a widening transatlantic divide. “A divide has opened up between Europe and the United States,” he said, adding that America’s claim to global leadership had been “challenged, and possibly lost.”

Relations between Washington and European capitals have also faced strain over Trump’s renewed interest in asserting U.S. control over Greenland and his proposal for the multibillion-dollar “Golden Dome” missile defense system, which he has pledged to make operational before the end of his term in 2029.

President Trump has argued that NATO allies must strengthen their commitments to Arctic security in response to what he describes as growing threats from Russia and China.

The remarks at Munich underscored mounting tensions within the Western alliance at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
