Sheikh Hasina leads Bangladesh to fifth term as PM, Swears in 37 ministers

DHAKA: Sheikh Hasina, the leader of the Awami League, became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for the fifth time. She formed a 37-member Cabinet, including 25 ministers and 11 state ministers, for her fourth consecutive term in office.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin swore in Sheikh Hasina and her new Cabinet at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban .

The Durbar Hall was packed with guests, including the Speaker, the Chief Justice, the Chief Election Commissioner, the Supreme Court Judges, the MPs, the political leaders, the military and civil officials, and the diplomats. The President’s spouse, the Prime Minister’s sister, and other family members were also present.

Sheikh Hasina, wearing a white Jamdani saree, looked confident and lively as she entered the Durbar Hall.The ceremony started with a recitation from the Holy Quran.

Sheikh Hasina pledged to uphold the constitution and the sovereignty of the country as she took the oath.

On January 7, the 12th parliamentary election was held in 299 constituencies. The Awami League won a landslide victory with 222 seats. The Jatiya Party won 11 seats, independent candidates won 62 seats, and the Awami League’s allies won three seats. Bangladesh Kalyan Party won one seat.
