Kyrgyz Deputy PM vows justice after hooligan attack on university

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan/Correspondent LP/ -In a shocking turn of events in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, the International University of Kyrgyzstan’s Faculty of Medicine dormitory was subjected to an attack by hooligans and looters on the night of 18th May. The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Edil Baisalov, made a visit to the university.

Baisalov was accompanied by Hasan Ali Zaigham, the Pakistani Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, and Asylbek Aidaraliev, the President of the International University of Kyrgyzstan. Addressing the foreign students and staff affected by the incident, Baisalov expressed his deepest sympathies, apologised for the violence, and reassured them that such acts are not representative of Kyrgyz culture and hospitality.

In a bid to restore confidence, Baisalov affirmed the commitment of the authorities to the safety and well-being of the students. He also announced that law enforcement agencies are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure justice is served.

Baisalov took the opportunity to inspect the dormitory premises and rooms during his visit. This visit came in the wake of a protest against foreigners that broke out on 17th May and ended the following morning after police intervention. The Ministry of Health reported 29 injuries during the protests.

In a related incident, a brawl at a hostel on 13th May led to the detention of four Egyptian citizens. A criminal case has been initiated under the charge of ‘Hooliganism’ as per the Kyrgyz Criminal Code.
