ASTANA —Air Asia, a prominent low-cost carrier in Southeast Asia, has launched direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Almaty starting from March 14, with a schedule of four flights per week.

The inaugural flight was celebrated with a ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, graced by the presence of Kazakh Ambassador to Malaysia, Bulat Sugarbayev, and other Kazakh diplomats.

Prior to the launch, a meeting was held between the Kazakh delegation, which included Saltanat Tompiyeva, the Chairwoman of the Civil Aviation Committee, and Malaysian aviation authorities. The meeting, attended by Dato’ Captain Norazman Mahmud, CEO of the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), and representatives from Air Asia X and Malaysia Airlines, centered on enhancing flight connectivity between Malaysian carriers and various cities in Kazakhstan. A key point of discussion was the implementation of the fifth-degree open sky framework to expand flight operations.

At the request of Malaysia Airport Holdings management, the Kazakh delegation conducted a visit to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to evaluate its operational efficiency. The visit highlighted the airport’s effective management of passenger traffic and airfield maintenance practices. As of the end of 2023, the Kuala Lumpur airport had a strong track record, serving over 60 global airlines and handling more than 60 million passengers.
