LONDON: In an interview with the i podcast Labour’s Plan For Power, Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy vowed to improve the UK’s ties with the European Union if his party wins the next general election. He said that Labour will make the EU its “top priority” in foreign policy.

He said: “Our backyard is our number one priority because of the war in Europe and because our prosperity and security depend on good relationships with our European partners.”

The Tottenham MP said that UK-EU relations would undergo “a tonal shift” if Labour won the election, with more frequent and regular talks between the governments. He also said that Britons would be “astonished” that the UK Government does not have discussions with the European Union “every four or six months” to address issues of mutual interest.“That’s what we need to do,” he said.

The shadow minister also revealed to the i that he would pursue a Defence Security pact with the EU.

“He (Boris Johnson) turned down a defence-security pact with the European Union, and we said that we think a security pact is essential,” Mr Lammy said.
