ASTANA, Kazakhstan — The Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has taken a significant step by developing a draft resolution to create the Caspian Sea Research Institute. This initiative, announced by the ministry’s press service on October 30, aims to address critical environmental issues within the Caspian Sea region.

The institute’s research focus will encompass several vital aspects:

  1. Declining Water Levels: Understanding and mitigating the factors contributing to the Caspian Sea’s decreasing water levels.
  2. Mass Mortalities of Seals and Fish: Investigating the causes behind seal and fish die-offs in the region.
  3. Preservation of the Caspian Seal Population: Efforts to safeguard this unique marine species.
  4. Coastal Areas and Marine Life: Comprehensive studies to protect coastal ecosystems and marine biodiversity.

Moreover, the institute seeks to foster close collaboration with other Caspian states, recognizing that environmental challenges transcend national boundaries.

Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, attributes the institute’s inception to a proposal put forth by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. By establishing this scientific organization, Kazakhstan aims to fulfill its international and national obligations in preserving the Caspian Sea ecosystem.

As research commences, we hope that objective data from the institute will guide comprehensive measures for sustainable management and conservation of this vital body of water.
