ROME: Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has been fined 5.85 million euros ($6.4 million) by Italy’s communications authority, Agcom, for violating the country’s ban on gambling advertising. The ban, which was introduced in 2018, covers all media platforms, including social networks.

Agcom said that Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, the entity responsible for Facebook and Instagram in Europe, had displayed ads for betting or games involving money on 18 profiles/accounts (13 on Facebook and five on Instagram), as well as 32 sponsored posts.

The fine is the latest in a series of penalties that Meta has faced in Europe for breaching data protection and consumer protection laws. Agcom also recently fined YouTube and Twitch for similar offences.
