MINSK,Belarus(LP Correspondent)-Belarus has announced that it will not invite the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to monitor its upcoming parliament vote. This breaks the usual practice of international election observation, which is seen as a way to enhance the transparency and credibility of elections.

elarusian authorities said on Monday they will not invite observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) in Europe to monitor the country’s parliamentary and local elections, scheduled for 25 February, 2024.

The OSCE is one of the world’s leading security-oriented intergovernmental organizations, with 57 participating States. It has played a key role in ensuring electoral integrity in its member states.

Belarus’ decision could draw criticism from various countries and organizations that support free and fair elections. International observers are often considered as a vital factor in maintaining electoral integrity. Belarus’ decision may worry those who are following the democratic developments in the country.

The broader consequences of this decision for Belarus’ international relations and internal politics are still unclear. However, Belarus’ representative Andrei Dapkiunas said that the country might reconsider its position if the West stops its policy of sanctions and interference in Belarus’ affairs.
