MOSCOW(TASS)- A Russian official has slammed the Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for retreating from Avdeevka, a strategic city in the Donbass region, where a conflict between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists has been raging since 2014.

Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, wrote on her Telegram channel that Zelensky and his allies only cared about money and fighting civilians, not defending the country. She said that Zelensky’s claim that he left the city to save lives was a lie.

“Zelensky and the gang know how to ‘fight’ only for big money, which goes straight into their pockets, and only against civilians. Everything else doesn’t matter to them,” Zakharova said.

According to earlier reports, the Ukrainian military group Tavria, which was in charge of Avdeevka, lost control of the city after a series of attacks by the separatists. The group’s commander, Alexander Tarnavsky, said that his troops had to withdraw from their positions and some of them were captured by the enemy.
