BISHKEK:As the new year dawned, Bishkek celebrated the hoisting of a new flag for the Kyrgyz Republic on Ala-Too square, along with a refurbished guard of honor cabin.

The Parliament passed the law on the revised national flag on Dec. 20, and President Sadyr Japarov signed it into effect. The change in the flag’s design, proposed by Parliament Speaker Nurlanbek Shakiev and MP Ulan Primov, involved straightening the rays from their previous wavy shape.

The new flag features 39 rays, one less than the old one, which represented the 40 ancient tribes that united to form the country. President Japarov stated at the second People’s Kurultai (congress) that the flag update would not cost the national budget any money.
