London police apprehended Pakistani-British hate preacher Anjem Choudary on suspicion of a terrorism offense. The arrest took place at his Ilford residence on Monday morning, and he is currently under interrogation.
A Canadian national was also detained at Heathrow Airport in connection with the Choudary allegations by the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit on Monday afternoon.
Details regarding the specific banned organization Choudary is accused of being a member of have not been disclosed yet.
Both individuals were arrested under the suspicion of membership in a proscribed organization, as per the Terrorism Act 2000. They are being held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 at a west London police station, with ongoing police searches at three addresses in east London.
Anjem Choudary, a prominent Islamic extremist in the UK, previously led hate groups like Al-Muhajiroun, which was banned by the British government after the 9/11 attacks in New York City and the July 7, 2005 bombings in London.
